I absolutely loved this cowboy boot & hat wearing family! And, I was super excited when they asked if I minded taking pictures of their son in his bull riding gear. Um, yes please!!!

He even showed me he's preriding ritual!

We did sis in her cheer gear too! But, what really stood out, was her sweet personality and pretty eyes.

We took a few pictures of big sis and her fiance, and this one happened to be my fav!

Yeah, I pretty much have the coolest clients! Thanks guys!

Breana & Daniel Are Getting Married!

I feel like a broken record, but I had so much fun with these two! I have really met some A-mazing people! It seems really hard to put into words. I feel so blessed to be a (small) part of my clients' lives. Breana & Daniel were no exception and I can't wait for their wedding in February! It was so hard to narrow down favorites, but here they are.

Snuggle Time Conversation

Tate and I were cuddled on the couch. Richard wanted a turn and the following conversation ensued.

Richard: "Tate, want to come lay with me?"

Tate: "No."

Richard: "I'll give you a candy!"

Tate: "No."

Richard: "I'll buy you a prize."

Tate: "No, I want to lay with mom."

Richard: "I'll give you a pickle!"

Tate: "Okay!"

Seriously, this kid loves pickles! Here he is in the pickle car at the Children's Museum. Also, I bought a(nother) huge jar from Costco and you would have thought it was Christmas all over again! On another Things Tate Loves note, this kid loves Bruno Mars. Whenever his songs come on the radio he sings away!!! It's the...cutest...thing...ever.

Palm Valley Golf Club Goodyear AZ: Zavarella Wedding

The Zavarellas were married at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear in late November. Their day was really special to be a part of.
Jillian looked absolutely stunning on the day of her wedding! She is just gorgeous inside and out.

It also happened to be the groom Tim's birthday.

I THOUGHT it was going to be the best year EVER

Even though I was turning 30, I really thought 2011 was going to be the best year EVER. I had trips, birthdays, and anniversaries all planned out. They were going to go off without a hitch. Because, that's how I planned them. Even though (some of) the trips still happened, the birthdays, and the anniversaries too, they weren't exactly as I had envisioned them. Instead, this year (by far) has been the biggest year of heartache, sacrifice, and growth for me. So. Much. Growing.

I learned so much about myself. My strengths. My weaknesses. And, I pondered. A lot.

At the beginning of 2011 I did the whole "one word game." Where you choose one word to describe something you wanted to achieve/do. My word for 2011 was "balance." I wanted to achieve balance in all aspects of my busy life. Family, friends, work, school, and health. I think I did pretty well, and decided I wanted to play the game again. My word for 2012 is "BE." Yes, I'm pretty much cheating at my own game because it has more than one meaning to me.

Maybe I should get them in vinyl and hang them on my wall? Oh goodness, I really am hilarious (wink). Here's to making 2012 the best year yet!

Things I Love: New Girl and Cute Mugs

I can't believe this year has come and gone?!?! I thought I'd do one last Things I Love post to finish out the year. So, here goes...

New Girl - It's hard to say out loud, but I think it's my favorite show of all time! It's definitely giving Friends a run for its money, no small feat. I love it so much! I have a few episodes still on my DVR and I watch them over and over and I laugh and I laugh. Internet, it's bad. If you haven't seen it yet, you definitely need to check it out on Hulu.

Mugs- I have a few that I love (my falalala Christmas, Our Gang complete with my boys picture, and the one that looks like a camera lens that my hubby got me). It's taking all the power I have to not buy every cute one I come across. I seriously stop, ogle, contemplate, and then sadly set them back down. It's becoming a real problem. But, the good news is I'm having some self control. However, I'm afraid like most good things, it will soon come to an end.

Today is Keelee's first birthday! I can't believe it was just one year ago that we did her newborn sesh. I used a little pinspiration to put together this mini design-board for Keelee's session.

You can see by the pictures it's not to be an exact replica, rather a guideline to making the shoot all your own. I l.o.v.e how this red pops and I love the yellow, her cute headbands, cute shoes, cute curls, and...

Care Package for Chase Soule

His Momma is my first cousin so, technically he's my second, but because I've gotten to watch him grow up, he feels more like a nephew to me. He plays well with my own boys and is just a sweetheart! Yesterday, they found out he had to have an emergency appendectomy. Unfortunately, his appendix ruptured and now he'll be in the hospital for a week (including Christmas day) fighting off the infection it caused. I'm going to be putting together a care package for him and I'm inviting anyone who would like to join in! I just wanted to share because many of my friends, family, clients, and blog readers know Chase personally. He lives only a few blocks from me, is in the same ward, and attends a nearby elementary school. So, I thought this would be the best way to let everyone know what we're doing!

He isn't allowed to eat anything so I was thinking along the lines of get well cards, small travel games, puzzles, puzzle books, reading books, ANYTHING!!! Small, big, silly, spiritual, a get well wish, ANYTHING! If you'd like to donate the change at the bottom of your purse, I'll take it! At least until Friday night...Saturday morning I'll be hitting the stores to gather up whatever I can! And, yes, I'll be taking things for his Momma too!

If you'd like to donate anything to our care package please email, text, or facebook me. I'll be accepting drop-offs (or I'll come pick it up) until Saturday around noon. I'll be taking the package to them the afternoon of Christmas Eve. And, of course, I promise pictures!!!

***UPDATE 12/21*** I went to see Chase last night and his spirits were high. He was just a little hungry. His Momma said this morning that he had a rough night but was doing much better. Here are a few pictures I took while there.

I took pictures of the Quintana family for the first time when their youngest daughter Kelee was just a newborn. In just a few short weeks, she'll be one! I was thrilled when they scheduled their holiday shoot with me. We met up near their home and got some really sweet shots of their cute little family. Mom was teasing Kelee that she didn't look so sweet in this first one. However, it was the first from the shoot and she warmed up quickly.

Graysen 6 Months

I am just as thrilled as can be that Graysen's family purchased a first year package from me! So far, we've done maternity, newborn, 3 month, and now 6 month pictures of him! It has been so exciting to see him grow!

Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary to my Parents

Today is my parents' 25th wedding anniversary, and, yesterday we celebrated with a breakfast honoring them. We had pancakes, pumpkin waffles, bacon, eggs, and orange juice. We had family over and we all shared stories about my parents. There were a lot of laughs, and even some (happy) tears. It was a lot of fun! I wish I would have taken more pictures, but I was busy cooking and visiting.

Here's a picture of them enjoying the story telling. I shared one of my favorite quotes. It always reminds me of my Dad ..."The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother." I'm so grateful for my dad. He loves my Mom so much, and I can't think of anyone who deserves it more than her. She's smart, beautiful, generous, honest, and always a great example to me. I love them both so much! Here's a picture of the "Smore love" favors I made! Idea from Pinterest. Obviously!?!?

Huge shout out to my hubby, no way I would have been able to pull it off with out his help.

The Calhouns in October

Editor's Note: He says this post is so long no one is going to read it. Consider yourself warned.

I can't believe how fast October flew by! It's now gone with the wind. Literally. The wind we had here yesterday was crazy! Thankfully it calmed down in time for my photo shoot. I'm definitely enjoying the cooler weather! Got my scarfs and boots out and everything! So, here's a quick synopsis of what the Calhouns did in October.

My kids had Fall Break for the first time ever. We never had Fall Break growing up, but, I have to say, I liked it. It's a nice little change of pace, if only for a week. As a family, we made the trek to Vertuccio Farms. It was a lot of fun, but got hot as the morning wore on. Before we drove out there, we stopped at Dunkin Donuts, a special treat for my kids. However, I made the mistake of letting them pick out chocolate donuts. Lesson learned. It really was a cute little farm, but, like with most things, my kids enjoyed doing the not-so-farmish things the most. We rode big pedal cars, jumped on a huge trampoline-bouncyhouse-thing-a-majig, saw (and talked) to all sorts of animals, rode the train, and EVERYONE whined and complained in the corn maze. It was everything I expected :)! But, seriously, if the Calhouns life depended on getting out of a corn maze, we'd all be goners.

The smile on this guys face whilst riding the pedal car was well worth the drive.

Jace begged to jump on the thing-a-ma-jig, and enjoyed it more than anything else on the farm. Love that smile!

Tate wasn't too comfortable on the thing-a-ma-jig (that's what I'm calling it until someone corrects me), so he convinced Daddy to push him on the swing.

We took a tour of all the animals...There were cows, chicks, ducks, geese, and pigs, to name a few.

Tate had us laughing hysterically when he started a conversation with one of the goats!

Goat, are you in there? What are you doing? Are you hiding? Can you come out? To which Richard remarked "You think the kids have seen one too many movies where the animals talk?" Too funny!

My kids were DYING to ride the train! I love these faces!

And then...there was the corn maze. I'll just end on that note, because what happened next was quite pathetic.

We also picked pumpkins as well. I had this grand idea that this year instead of carving our pumpkins we were going to decorate them. I saw so many cute ideas on pinterest, and had even ripped some ideas out of a magazine. So it was very difficult for me when my kids didn't like any of them. Instead, they had their own ideas, and I was having mad anxiety that they weren't turning out as I planned. I had to take deep breaths and remember that it was all for them anyways. Here's the end result.

I didn't get the picture until Halloween night, and unfortunately, Tate's pumpkin didn't survive until then.
The kids and I also made bats, lots of them! You can see these decorative bats we made in our Halloween pics, but, unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of the 70 Halloween treats we made for their classmates. Here's a picture I took from the Skip To My Lou blog where I got the tutorial and pattern.

It was quite a process, and even Dad helped. The kids school doesn't have Halloween parties, but they do let them pass out treats and the end of the day if they want. The bats were a hit!

Now, for the grand finale! Our homemade Halloween costumes! I'm not talking about the kind you make yourself, but no one can really tell. This was our first attempt at anything like this, and I was very proud of the fact that we only spent $5 this year (versus the almost $100 plus we've spent in years past). I already know what we're doing next year. I can't wait!

I got the idea for Jace to be Clark Kent off Pinterest. As soon as I saw the picture, I knew he had to do it! I don't think the picture does him justice. He looked rather cute, and pretty much everyone knew who he was!

Tate was adorable! He had a "will work for candy" sign, and when anyone would ask what he was, he would say "I work for candy!"

We didn't decide that Jaren would be a pirate until the week before Halloween. But he loved it, and that's all that matters!

I've never been super into Halloween, but I'm getting better and I'm starting to collect more and more decorations. My kids (and myself) love it!

I almost forgot. I also attended the Mother/Son Dance with my babies, the two that are in school anyway! We had a really good time dancing untill the wee hour of 7:30! Love these two!

Sometimes She Shows Me

I may be 12 years older, and way cooler...but sometimes, she shows me. How to tough it out, hang in there, and win life's battles, so to speak. A few weekends ago, I went to my baby sister's volleyball tournament. It's the first one I've been able to attend and stay for more than one game, kid free no less. It was so fun, and pretty intense.

In one of the matches, my sister went up for a block and hurt her hand. When my mom and I saw tears coming, we knew she was really hurt. My sister doesn't cry. Ever. She came out for a bit, and the trainer told her it looked like a sprain, and gave her two options. She could sit out for the rest of the tournament, or, he could wrap it up, and she could go back in. I won't tell you the exact words she used {{{explicit}}}, but it was something like, "No way I'm sitting out." After going back in, my sister killed it. Literally. Killed the ball. I don't know the exact stats, but she tore it up, playing better than I've ever witnessed. She even served the ball one handed. I was truly amazed. To top it all off, my sister scored the winning point, in the winning game, to win the entire tournament. My heart swelled with pride, and tears rolled. It was very emotional. Seriously, the kind of stuff you see in movies.

Thank you for showing me, sissy! Thank your for showing me that when times are tough, when no one would blame you for sitting out, and, even when it hurts, you still play the game. Not only did you play, but you played hard, and you won! Love ya!

Children's Museum of Phoenix

I went with Tate and his preschool to the Children's Museum! This experience was much different (and more enjoyable) than my first trip. The first time I went with Jace's kindergarten class, and I was in charge of five five year olds. Plus, it was field trip day. It was packed and I was having mad crazy anxiety. But this day, there was hardly anyone there, and I really enjoyed the time I got to spend with my baby.

I did not attempt this jungle gym thing of sorts on my first visit to the museum, but I more than made up for it this time. We did the whole thing top to bottom (3 stories) twice. I even got down on my hands and knees and was crawling in some places. Mom of the year?

The air tubes that shoot stuff out (not sure of their actual name) was one of Tate's favorite things at the museum, and we probably spent most of our time playing at them.

I'm not sure what this one is called either, but Tate enjoyed it nonetheless.

The ice cream cart!

If you know this baby, you know he loves pickles...I was trying to get a picture of him in the pickle car, but there were tons of kids surrounding it, so, no such luck. I love his face in this one though!
The museum is full of imaginative play...It really is every child's dream. Here's Tate in the pretend pizza parlor. Apron?

I've always been a true believer in the statement, but a passage from a book I was reading the other day gave me a little more insight. I've thought about it a lot...and I wanted to share it on my blog.

"No one can get joy by merely asking for it. It is one of the ripest fruits of life, and like all other fruits, must be grown. Happiness is the bud, the blossom, and the fruit of good and noble actions. It is not the gift of God. It must be earned."

I seriously could write the longest post in history about it. I could break it down sentence by sentence, word by word. But, then, who would read it? However, if it struck a cord with you, you could leave a comment and we can continue the conversation there!?!?

I saw the poster in the movie theater months ago, and, being completely honest, what attracted me to it at first was Emma Stone. She's been one of my favorite actresses since House Bunny. I kinda wish I was joking, but I'm being totally serious. I love her.

Anyway, someone mentioned it was a book, but it wasn't until I read that the author, Kathryn Stockett, had been turned down for publication 60 times (60 TIMES!) that I knew I had to read the book before I saw the movie. I kinda felt like I owed it to Kathryn for never giving up.

The book was wonderful of course, and I can't wait to see the movie. I kept picturing Emma Stone as Skeeter, then had to double-check with someone who saw it that it was Emma who actually played the part. Can you imagine how thrown off I would have been? That's just good casting right there.

My only complaint is the book is written from three different perspectives. It's my fault I guess. Whenever a book is written this way, it makes it harder for me to get into the character, and, sometimes, I just get down right confused. For example, in the last book I read, it took quite a while before I realized the perspective had even changed. Confused indeed... Don't get me started on Breaking Dawn. I hate. hate. hate. hate. that there are chapters told from Jacob's view. In fact, when I re-read it, I skip over that part. Totally serious...

One last thing, I know the book is fiction, but it's still gut-wrenching to imagine life like that. You know, separate bathrooms and stuff. At times it feels unfathomable, but that's the way it really was. It's really hard for me to process that kind of thinking.

These Ain't Mee-Maw's Meatballs

True story: A while ago, after returning home from a photo shoot, my oldest son informed me that my meatballs weren't as good as MeeMaw's. Now, this might not have been that big of a deal, except he hadn't ever had MeeMaw's meatballs. Turns out, my husband took the liberty of informing him.

So, it's with that warning that I share the recipe for my "These Ain't MeeMaw's Chicken Parmesan Meatballs," which are nonetheless delicious, and super easy. I promise. My whole family really does enjoy them.

1lb (about 3 links) ground Parmesan Chicken (from Sprouts). I use it because it's already seasoned.
1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1 beaten egg
1 jar of marinara sauce
Oil to coat the bottom of skillet

Heat oil on medium heat. Combine ground chicken, cheese, bread crumbs, and egg in a medium to large bowl. Form 1 inch meat balls (MB) in the palm of your hand (recipe yields about 12).

Place MB in hot oil turning frequently to brown on all sides (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from pan, and let rest on paper towel (to soak up the extra oil). Place marinara in pan (removing extra oil beforehand), and after it's warm, return the MB to reheat and soak up the marinara (3-5 minutes).

Serve with your favorite pasta (we prefer angel hair), caesar salad, and garlic bread.

"Life is Hard Ya'll"

Sometimes, I want to shout it! Because, well, it's true. So, I have a confession. I like to keep a journal. Not in a dear diary sort of way, but in a, I just need a special place to write down feelings, quotes, or scripture, kind of way. I started my first when I was 17.

It mostly has quotes and scriptures that I never wanted to forget. I've come back to it often, but the quote that I remember from it most (without having to refer back) is a favorite.

"The greatest battle of life is fought within the silent chambers of the soul..."

There's more, but the first line is what has stuck with me most. I guess it's because it rings so true in my own life. It also made me realize that I should never, for one second, think it isn't true for others. Some people have to fight their battles where everyone can see, the loss of a loved one, or perhaps an illness, but, most of us fight our battles on the inside. I guess what I'm trying to say is that life is hard...for everyone...It doesn't matter how perfect you may think someones life is; It isn't.

I'm no exception, and I would never pretend to be. But, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away (sorry, I couldn't resist), I made a choice. At first, I thought maybe it was subconsciously, but, after thinking back, it was most definitely a conscious choice. I chose the kind of person I wanted to be, kind, caring, and happy, to name a few qualities. I'm by no means perfect at any of these things, but I've worked very hard at them. It wasn't something I realized until recently. Sometimes, it's not easy to be kind. Sometimes, it takes a conscious effort to be caring. And, sometimes, it's hard to be happy. Life is hard ya'll. But, I've learned that if we make up our minds who we want to be today, it won't be as hard to be that person tomorrow.

Sunshine Preschool

All three of my boys have gone to Sunshine Preschool. It's taught by Mrs. Black out of her home. She's a former school teacher, and we absolutely love her! I can't believe it's already my baby's turn. I was pregnant with him when Jaren was there, just four short years ago.
My baby is gonna be four...What the...

But, I digress. The last three years I've done pictures for the class. It's always a fun little adventure. The kids are so cute, and sometimes really shy. I love that they get to have class pictures taken just like their big brothers and sisters, and, since I only charge them what the prints cost me, it's really affordable.

I try to keep it really simple and traditional with a plain back drop, and then we head outside for the group picture. Here's my little Tate.

Antique Challenged

This morning, while waiting in line I heard something I hadn't in a long time. Dial-up. Yes, a dial-up internet connection. I commented to the lady (who was roughly my age) how our children wouldn't even know what that noise was. Then she laughed as I proceeded to tell her how last night my 8 year old picked up an old rotary antique phone in my office and held the receiver upside down. I have the picture to prove it, and, after a few minutes of pleading, he finally agreed to let me put it on facebook.

I told him everybody would leave comments telling him how handsome he was...Come on friends help me out!?!?

Anyway, this is the same phone that my six year old picked up a few months ago, spun the dial and said "look mom I'm texting!" So, I officially dubbed my children "antique-challenged." Get it? Instead of technologically challenged? Yes, I can actually feel myself aging as I type. It feels like deep wrinkles, laugh- lines, and time marching on.

Book Report: Recipes for a Perfect Marriage

Let me preface this book report by saying this book isn't what it sounds like.

In fact, I probably wouldn't have ever read it (or picked it up), except it was recommended to me, and I apologize because I don't remember by who. Anyhow, the book shares the story of two women and their marriages, or the struggles of their marriages rather. They relate their struggles to difficult recipes, hence the title, and they liken marriage to the delicate nurture needed to get a recipe just right. I really rather enjoyed the book. Although the struggles in my marriage are different, it was easily relatable. I've always been of the opinion that marriage, or any relationship really, is very much like a recipe. It needs a delicate balance of ingredients (love, patience, kindness, etc.) to get it just right. Cause you know...I've got it all figured out (wink).

3 Weeks

That is all that is officially left before school starts again. At the end of this last school year, I vowed to savor the summer, to cherish the time with my kids, to not wish it away begging for the school year to begin again. I promised myself that at the end of the summer my kids would know their Mommy loved them more than anything. I tried my best, and I'm proud to say I truly enjoyed the time spent with them. That's not to say I'm not excited for the school year to begin again, (can you say routine?!?!) and, at times, it did take a very conscious effort. But I digress...in just three weeks time, they'll go off to school again, make new friends, have life experiences, and become another year older...and, so will I.

I have used this summer to reflect on many aspects of my life both personally and professionally. I have had eye opening experience after eye opening experience, and I've grown in so many different ways. But, now that the summer is winding down, I'm getting excited for the fall, and the busy photo season. Like I said, I've reflected on things "professionally," what worked, and what didn't. I'm excited to implement some new business practices, try new things, photograph my wonderful clients, and hopefully meet some new and amazing people! I'm working on a few fun things and I can't wait to share them. I will officially begin booking mid-August. I'll begin with past clients first, and than open it up for new ones!

Family

I'll just come right out and say it, there is nothing more important to me than family. In fact, I can't think of a single thing I'd rather do than spend time with mine. Don't get me wrong, I love my computer, work, to watch t.v., and have dinner with girlfriends, but none of those compare to building family relationships. So even though our bi-annual family reunion was canceled (due to the Norther AZ fires), I decided to make the five hour drive to see my family anyway. Thankfully, my sister came along to keep me company.

We arrived in Eager Saturday afternoon, and, as soon as we stepped out of the car, I took a deep breath in. I hadn't noticed it before, but Eager has a smell all its own. It's a good smell, fresh, clean, and familiar. Later that night, we had dinner with my cousins, Linda and Stacey (and Stacey's son Kenny). It was so nice. I hadn't seen, or talked to Linda, in a very long time. Hopefully, I was able to convince her to join facebook so we can keep it touch. We'll see...
After breakfast Sunday morning, we decided to go for a walk. We had to burn those traveling calories somehow, and neither of us brought running shoes. We walked a part of Springerville I had never been to before and we happened upon this historical building. If memory serves me right, it was the first LDS Church meeting-house in the late 1800's.

After we showered and got ready, we drove around to see all the old sites. This is the site were my Great Grandparents' house stood before it had to be torn down. The tree swing has been there since I can remember (although I'm not sure how long), and the outhouse way in the back is the original from before indoor plumbing (wink).

After our excursion, we headed down to Greer to visit my Uncle Kenny's family. We had fun visiting for a few hours, and then we headed down to the creek to frolic in the water.

I believe Greer was the hardest hit by the fires. In the distance you could see the whole side of the mountain where it had burned, and ash still floated around in the air. In fact, a few of the cabins where my Uncle's family stayed burned down in the fire prior to their arrival.

Sunday evening we got to visit with the rest of the family at my cousin Rita's house. It was so nice to see everyone and I miss them already. So much so that I decided I couldn't wait another two years to see them, and made a proclamation to go back next year, and every year after that.

Random: Haircut, iPhone, the 4th of July, & Facebook

A lot of randomness so bear with me...

First off, I cut about 5-6 inches off my hair. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it yet. But, after growing it out for 3+ years, I decided it needed to be done, for a number of reasons (too many to name here).

I got an iPhone for my birthday! I wanted to get one earlier in the year, but was patiently waiting for my contract to renew. Then, when it came time, I had many a qualm about spending the money (it literally made me feel sick to my stomach). However, my husband didn't, and I got one anyway. Don't get me wrong, I love it! I think it's "smart," pretty, fun, and smart. I love it! I've already got some great apps. My favorite so far is instagram. It's a quick little editing program for your pictures. It has many cute actions you can run and it crops all of the pictures square. I think it's a really fun, and an easy way to give your camera phone pictures a little something extra. Plus, it's free. There's also Angry Birds, which is a family favorite, and I'm super excited to try the Nike run app (that came with the phone) on my run tomorrow. What are you favorite apps? Please share...

These pictures from the Fourth of July were taken with my iPhone and edited in instagram. I spent a wonderful afternoon with my family. We took the boys swimming at my parents' house, and enjoyed grilled hot dogs, and some yummy macaroni salad my Momma made.

I made baked smores from a recipe I found. I think they were good, but not worth the work. I think from now on we'll stick to the traditional method.

I got the idea to bundle licorice off Pinterest. They used blue paper, but we used these cute Americana scraps I had left over. Hint: It was a good way to stay within the serving size.

We also enjoyed Red, White, & Blue Jello while we waited for fireworks to start (also got the idea off Pinterest). We're lucky to be able to watch them from our loft.

Lastly, I set a goal to reach 400 facebook "likes" by July 10th. So, you know, we're 6 away, and, if you wanted...I would be very appreciative (wink).

Fourth of July

I often ponder the sacrifice so many have made for our country especially on holidays like today. To the men and women who are away from their families, to the ones who have given their life...my admiration is hard to express. I watched the film Restrepo (a documentary that followed American soldiers in Afghanistan) with my hubby a few months ago, and, being a mother of three boys, it struck me in a way I had never known before. I couldn't help but imagine my own boys out there, and my heart ached. I thought of their mothers. I wanted to give them a hug. I wanted to tell them thank you. Since I'm not able to do that, today I'm going to hold my hubby's hand tighter, give my babies more kisses than could ever be necessary, and, never ever forget the people who make this country great! Happy Fourth of July!

Letting Go

I don't get offended, or upset too often, but when I do, I have a hard time getting over it, especially when I feel like the issue went unresolved. Unfortunately, I recently took a ride on the I-can't-get-over-it-train. So, I did the only thing I knew to do. Pray.

Book Report: Classics, Enjoyment, & Business

Richard got a Nook for his birthday, but he was finishing up a paperback, so I had free reign for a while. I wasn't so sure about it at first, but I thought I'd give it a try. It was the least I could do. I read all the books I mention on it (except those pictured). I think I prefer paper, but the e-reader was nice, convenient, and easy to handle. I've mentioned before that I wasn't much of a reader until I was older, and now I find myself making up for lost time. Just this year I've read some of the classics for the first time.

The Classics:

The Scarlett Letter (which I purchased a while ago, and just got around to); Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; L Frank Baum
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Lewis Carroll
Great Expectations; Charles Dickens
Grimm's Fairtytales; Brother's Grimm

I enjoyed reading them all, including those I've seen on T.V. and in the movies. I must say, they do take creative liberties when they make those movies, although it might be better that way. Some of the books are a bit gory.

For enjoyment: I got Bossy Pants; Tina Fey for Mother's Day, perfect! I really enjoyed it and finished it in just a couple of days. If you like Tina, you'll love the book!

For business: Selling the Invisible; Harry Beckwith-Great book on marketing strategies, and making the most out of your business. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a business of their own, It's truly insightful.

Here goes nothing: Decision Points, George W. Bush-I'll be honest, I didn't have high expectations for this book. In fact, I had no intentions of even reading it. It was just lying around the house and I picked it up the other night, started reading, and was hooked. I haven't finished (and it's really long), but so far I really love his story telling.

Pinterest & Grapesicles

I've been avoiding the temptation for months now, but yesterday I finally cracked. I joined Pinterest and guess what? It's just as addictive, and time consuming as everyone said it was. What is Pinterest, you ask? Well, according to them " it's a place to categorize the things you love." Basically, you can "pin" (or tag) all your favorite ideas on the Internet. They make it really simple to bookmark your favorite sites and add picture's for reference. It is so easy. I don't know why somebody didn't think of it sooner. However, you do have to be "invited" to join Pinterest, and the real kicker for me is you can "follow" your friends and they can "follow" you. So, I spent the whole afternoon culling through my friends "pins", and got lots and lots of ideas for things I want to do, plus added some things I already had stashed away in my favorites folder (crafts, recipes, how to's, decoration ideas, etc.). After feeling guilty for spending the amount of time I did on Pinterest, and the fact that I let the kids eat left over Father's Day cinnamon rolls for lunch, I decided we would make grapesicles. Got the idea off Pinterest, obviously.
The grapesicles were easy peasy and the kids really enjoyed making and eating them.

First, we washed our hands, and then the grapes.
Tate picked them all off the vine for us.
Then the big boys and I put them on skewers.
Then they went into the freezer for two hours, and were ready to eat!

I also decided to add this pictures, because, I love it! Don't mind the hair or the Grinch. Although, truth be told, they're probably my favorite part (wink).

SUCCESS

Not very many people love a good weight loss SUCCESS story more than me. In my own weight loss/becoming healthy journey, I've learned so much. For starters, it's hard work. HARD. WORK. PEOPLE...and, I love when people share and celebrate their journey with me.
That's why I'm super excited to share today's SUCCESS story in the making. Jen is currently rounding the bend on 60 days of her 90 day work out with TurboFire (the same company that produced P90X). After which, she'll maintain by working out 3 days a week. She also enjoys a shakeology once a day. So far, she's lost 14 lbs, 20 inches (combined in overall body fat), and 2 pant sizes. I'm so proud of her and was happy to celebrate her SUCCESS with a mini photo shoot. Here are a few of my favorites.

Getting In Touch With My Inner Baker

Unless it comes in a box, I'm usually not much of a baker. But, I've been trying my (from scratch) hand lately. Some of the things I've made include:

Banana Bread (Betty Crocker's recipe is to die for, for realsies).
Buttermilk Biscuits
Oatmeal Cookies
Honey wheat bread (although I made it from scratch I used a bread machine, so, I don't know if that counts).
Banana Pancakes & Blueberry Pancakes (on separate occasions).

So far, my favorite is a three way tie between the banana bread, banana pancakes, and the oatmeal cookies. I also slow cooked BBQ pork, for sandwiches. It was good, but I don't know if it was worth the time (it took over 8 hrs). Also, one afternoon the kids and I made chocolate covered bananas, which were quite the delicious treat!

One of my goals for the summer (since photo shoots are few and far between) is to learn to take better pictures of food. It's really hard ya'll. Like, really. Plus once I'm done cooking the last thing I want to do is take a picture of it, I want to eat! One thing I'm learning, from experience, is that food pretty much always looks better in natural light. No bueno para mi, I have not one window in my kitchen. So, I've been moving the food over to my kitchen table where the light from the back door hits. Another trick I'm learning is to use colorful plates and such, especially when the food is a little more of a bland color. I think this picture of my oatmeal cookies was a pretty good first try.

By first try I mean the pictures, this was my second attempt at the cookies. The first attempt was okay (my kids sure did enjoy them) but the cookies were kind of dry, and a little bland. I know what you're thinking, aren't all oatmeal cookies? But, I knew I could do better. So, when I set out again, I used craisins (instead of raisins, I always have them on hand), and added an extra teaspoon of cinnamon (next time I'll do a half), and took the cookies out two minutes early so they'd bit a little bit more moist. Success, they were delicious!

...your child loves the blanket you made him, even if it took you six years to finish.

If memory serves me right, I bought this material before I was even pregnant (hence the neutral colors), and the baby it was intended for turned six last month. I had worked on it in bits and pieces and finally finished this weekend. I tool my sewing machine out to fix a small tear in something else, and, there it was, screaming to be finished. Now maybe I'll finally start Tate's? What? He's only three?!?!

A Great Message

Richard shared this video with me after someone shared it with him (I'm not sure whom). Anyhow, it's a great reminder to keep pushing myself to get to where I want to be. I'm not sure where that is yet; I just know I'm not there. I remind myself daily "If you're not pushing yourself, it's probably not worth doing," and I 100% believe it.

I was watching a movie the other day and I shared a quote on facebook from a wise old women. She said "Dreaming is wonderful, but it won't get you closer to what you want...Do it now."

The Perks

So, this job has many perks, one being I get to meet all kinds of new and amazing people! Another is when I get to work with the wonderful friends and family I already have. Last week, I took pictures of my cousin Jamie's family, including her newborn baby. It's so nice to be able to see people I don't get to see very often, all while sharing something that I love so much (taking pictures) with them.

Her adorable in-laws were able to join us for a few shots as well!

The Good and the Bad

May was such a busy month for us that I wasn't able to take my boys annual birthday pictures on their birthdays (May 15th &16th). We were finally able to do it a few days ago. We headed over to one of my favorite spots and my boys were excited to finally be able to wear their new outfits. But, believe you me, taking pictures of my own kids has its ups and downs. First off, I'm far less patient with my own kids, quite simply, because my kids should do what I say, right? Wrong.

Take this guy for example, he will look everywhere, but directly at the camera. Up, down, to the side, just not at Mom. It's like he's allergic.

He also has what we dubbed the Joker smile (the picture above is a tame version). But, alas, there are good ones too.

Then, there's this guy. He's quite used to it by now. He knows the sooner he cooperates, the sooner it will be over. He's smart like that. I know I'm biased, but I think he has the prettiest smile. His lips are to die for, and his smile is quite contagious (he gets both from his dad).

The biggest problem is he's 8 and he's loosing a lot of teeth, which means two things: He's about to put the tooth fairy out of business, and he's VERY self conscious of his smile.

I, for one, love it! First off, it'll only last a little while, then they get "grown-up teeth." I don't like associating the word grown-up with any part of my babies. Any.

A Much Needed Break

I had an absolutely wonderful weekend! I celebrated the wonderful holiday that is Memorial Day with the four biggest blessings in my life, and I'll add they're all handsome to boot! I took a much needed break from the computer (I only got on one time, when I needed to retrieve a recipe) no e-mail, blogging, or facebook. The only problem was I didn't really want to turn it back on (wink). I Hope your holiday was fabulous, and you were able to celebrate your freedom & all those who made it possible.

Texture and A Lot of It

I was going through images from some of the more recent photo shoots I've done. My mission: to see if I could nail down any constants (i.e. what do they all have in common). Trying to find "My Style" isn't as easy as it might seem. Every photographer has one, right? I think figuring out what my style entails is important for a few reasons.

First (and probably most important if your going to do photography professionally), developing a "style" will bring specific clients to you. They'll know what to expect and won't be let down.
Second, knowing how and why you shoot images the way you do, is a huge eye-opening experience. It has really helped me better understand myself as a photographer. It has also helped me become more confident, which I think shines through in my work. Now, before you think I'm getting all conceited on you, don't. I still feel like I have so much to work, and improve upon. The day I feel like I don't will be the day I put down my camera forever.

So, back to where we started...my images. There were two things that really stuck out to me. One, I really like texture; and two, I really like earthy natural tones. This probably explains why I like shooting in the desert so much, It includes a lot of both. I would also add, for me, the simpler the image, the better. I like to take the less is more approach.

What my clients can expect from me: Beautiful, natural looking images that capture your personality and/or mood.
How we will do this: We'll spend some time geting to know each other. We'll also work together to help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Types of images you can expect: Light and airy images with natural textures and colors.

This image I shot earlier in the week is a great example. I love the sunflare from the bright (natural) light. I love, love, love, the texture of the grass and the tree in the background. Add a pretty expectant Momma and you've got a classic Calhoun ink image.

A Sentimental Dork

That's what I am. I hate, hate, hate, the feeling when people move away, especially when you don't know if, or when, you'll ever see them again. Don't get me started on the end of the school year/semester. I hate it. I am, however, truly grateful for tools like Facebook, and blogs, that help me stay connected. Although I've only photographed this family once before, I'm sad they're moving to Utah at the end of the week. I will truly miss them. They're hopeful that when their stint in the military is over they'll be able to move back here. So, I'll keep my fingers crossed that this wasn't the last time I get to photograph them.

This first image is in front of their home. It has the cutest little porch with the cutest little rocking chairs.

This little cutie took dance at the same place I do, and it was fun to see her in the recital. She even gave me an encore presentation while we waited to get started.

This handsome little guy is probably one of the best babies I've ever photographed. In two sessions, I don't think I've heard him cry once.

Dance Recital

So, I think I've mentioned before that I take dance, and, how, if you know me, you know this is WAY outside my comfort zone. But, it has truly been an amazing experience. First of all, it's super fun and I enjoy the friendships that I've formed with the other girls. Second, it has taught me to push myself beyond what I ever knew I was capable of doing. It has taught me to not give up, to keep pushing myself forward, and that, like most things in life, you need to practice, practice, practice, which is really funny because I'm constantly telling my boys this. I tell them things like "Calhouns don't give up," or, "Calhouns don't say can't," and that "If you want to be good at anything in life you'll have to practice, a lot." I guess it's about time I practice what I preach (wink). Without further ado, here is a picture of me and the girls after Friday Night's Recital.

My husband is so sweet to support me. He brought me flowers to my first recital (this one was the second) without me even mentioning it. I was completely surprised. He didn't disappoint this time either. He brought me lillies, which he knows is one of my favs. Thanks hun, love ya!

My boys thought the root beer was quite a treat. I know I'm a mean mom, but I don't usually let them have soda too often. It's reserved for special occasions, or as a treat if they've eaten all their dinner, behaved really well, etc. I think it's mostly because I don't drink much of it myself. All right, break out the sunblock, and high energy bills, summer is officially here.

P.S. Today is the last day of the school year! I'm already freaking out about what to do this summer. We've already planned on summer movies, summer reading program, we have a few small trips planned, and we'll do swimming lessons at the end of June. Yep, that's what she said as I tried to help her with the finishing touches. I wanted to retort with a "Ha, it's been twelve years, shows what you know." But, I thought better of it. Instead I tossed my hair over my shoulder, and walked out of the room. Just like that, my baby sister was off to prom, and despite the exchange I was very excited for her. It is a rite of passage after all (wink).

This is exactly how I've felt these past few weeks. Just like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. Which I think, when I have time, I'd like to re-watch with my boys. Senior Portrait Photographer: Conte

Newborn Portrait Photographer: Sneak Peak Flores

The 4-1-1 Newborn Portraits

Portraits are typically done within the first week of birth. Babies still sleep a lot during this time, and fit nice and easily into the fetal position, making those adorable newborn shots effortless. They really do grow fast, and you'll want to catch this stage before it's gone for good.

Newborn portraits are done at your home. This is where Mom and Baby are most comfortable, and lets face it, it's safer, and there's less exposure to germs.

With newborn photo shoots, babies rule. They get to eat and sleep as much as they want, and it's the only time in their lives they get away with peeing and pooping on everything and (sometimes) every body. We'll just go with the flow (no pun intended).

I get asked a lot about props, but I honestly think the best props are sentimental. Blankets from grandparents, or outfits worn home from the hospital, make for sweet treasured photographs. Of course, if you have something in mind, we can definitely include it.

As merely a suggestion, I tell the parents to wear solid black shirts and join in the fun. I suggest solid black so busy prints and colors don't take away from the beautiful baby.

Favorite Finds: Jamba Juice (In Your Freezer)

It's been bothering me for months now. We've lived in the west valley for almost 8 years and still don't have a Jamba Juice (or anything like it) out here. The closest one is almost 30 minutes away. What's up with that? So, I was elated when I saw that you can now buy Jamba Juice in your freezer section. All you have to do is add a cup of juice to these handy dandy little freezer packs. Holla! It taste just like the real thing...cold, nutritious, and delicious.

So, today's lesson is, if you can't get to the Jamba, bring the Jamba to you!

Because Running Makes for the Best Metaphors

It rained on Saturday, which wouldn't be so weird, except this is Phoenix. You know, the Valley of the Sun. Tee-ball games were canceled, photo shoots were rescheduled, and I spent the day with my family, nowhere to be, and no interruptions...it was nice. Don't get me wrong, my patience got some much needed exercise, but it was nice. Quiet time came, or, as I like to call it, Mom needs to regroup for the sake of her sanity (even on the best of days)...

This is where the metaphor begins...
I didn't want to do it. After all, it was cold outside, and Arizona blood runs deep in this girl's veins. The skies were dark, the streets were wet, and I would have to change my clothes (gasp). But, quiet time would soon come to an end, this would be my last chance, and as much as I'd like to pretend, exercising my patience doesn't count as physical activity. So, I sucked it up, changed my clothes, and put on my running shoes. With i-pod in hand, I set out the door. I was a third of the way through, the air was refreshing, my lungs heaved in and out, my heart beat like a drum, and a light mist had begun. Not gonna lie, thoughts of turning around crossed my mind, and in just a few moments time, the rain was coming down in a steady stream. I was a little fearful of slipping, but chugged right along. On the final stretch, my eyes filled with tears, and the real water works came. You see, it wasn't about how long, or far, that it was raining, or that I was soaking wet. It was about pushing myself, when I didn't want to, when the conditions were less than desirable, when fear and doubt loomed as dark as the skies, I did it.

I originally started this post on Monday, but was having a hard time finishing. I'm glad it's being published today because I found this cool post from Tip Junkie. There are some really great tips on fitting in a workout with a busy schedule. The first one, plan ahead, is my favorite! I guess I never really thought about it, but this is something that I've always done. I didn't wake up one day and decide today's the day I'm going to work out, and actually do it. I've had to carefully plan the when and the where. It took some trial and error, but I've finally got it down. I run/do Pilates Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, usually after I get the kids off to school. Planning ahead has really helped me hold myself accountable, and having breaks has actually helped me stick to it.

Playing in Your First Tee-Ball Game- Priceless

I couldn't resist! Two Saturdays ago, Jace got to play his first tee-ball game. I was a proud mama, and, with the exception of twirling in the outfield, he did really well. He even caught a grounder, threw it to first base, and got the kid out...except, they don't actually call kids out in tee-ball. Oh, and I'm "that mom" (the one with the camera documenting ever little thing), so consider yourself warned (wink).

Ok, even though the next one is blurry, by accident, I actually like it better than the crisp pictures. Our little Jace is fast and we're wondering how he'd do in track?

Hats off to the volunteer coaches! They totally deserve it.

This wasn't this guy's first rodeo, and, if you know him personally, you know this is a classic Jaren look.

Again with the blurry, but this time on purpose.

He actually scored every time he got up, and, now it actually counts.

Of course, the whole gang was there to cheer them on! It made for a long, hot, sunburn kind of day. The first of many!

Tate can't wait for the day his brothers get to come watch him play, and believe you me, he will have paid his dues by then.

No Shame In My Game

Not too long ago, a dear friend had written a post about guilty pleasures. At the time, I wasn't really sure I had any (besides the obvious food and shopping). Then, recently, I realized what mine is.

Music.

I know, I'm so weird, right? The thing is...I love it all. I'm the only girl I know who downloads country, hip-hop, rap, pop, and rock, all in the same sitting. If it's got a good beat and/or I can relate, you'll probably find me dancing or singing along, sometimes, even in embarrassing places, like the gym.

What I've found even more interesting, is that, lately, I've found a lot of inspiration in musicians.

Let me explain...

A while ago I was watching Behind The Music Lil Wayne, and then 50 Cent. The one thing I noticed was how they both said they where going to be the best. Regardless of whether you like them or not, you have to give them that. They've both risen to the top of their industry, and, became the best at what they do. In that moment, it hit me. I needed to do the same.
No more "I'll try," or "hopefully one day." I simply stated, for the record, that I was going be the best at what I do.

This was a giant leap for me. I have never, in my whole life, thought I could be the best at anything (probably why I never have been). Now, I realize that with making such a bold statement comes a lot of responsibility.

To live up to such standards (these new ones I've set for myself), is hard. It hasn't been that long, and I've already had my doubts. Every time they creep in I have to find strength within myself. I think Eminem says it best...

'Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter...

Now, I know I'm not even close to there yet, but I need you all to hold me accountable (wink). Like I said, it's only been a short time, but, I already see a big difference in my work, and when I see how far I've come in just a few short years, heck, even a few weeks, I'm so excited to see how far I'll go!

Spring Break 2011

We had an absolutely fabulous Spring Break! We mostly chilled, enjoyed good company, and got some much needed relaxation. We started Spring Break off by having friends over for dinner, and breaking out the Slip n Slide Tate got for his birthday. (You'll have to pardon the pictures, my camera was set on auto.)

Tate mostly did this.

We had days where the boys dressed themselves (pajamas, capes, and the like!).

There were video games played...

messes to be made, and naps to be taken.

Oh, there was a day we got all spiffied up and went to the "movie feater" to see Rango. It was, well...everything I expected from a cartoon movie with Johnny Depp.

Our Spring Break ended with a B-B-Q at the Dawson's whilst we watched the UA game. Can you tell where these girls went to school?
As a delightful surprise, the horses were saddled up and the boys got to take them for a spin, their first.
